The first free election in South Africa, in April 1994, was almost derailed. A military alliance of Chief Buthelezi's Inkatha Freedom Party, Eugene Terre' Blanche's right-wing AWB, and the rulers of some of the tribal mini-states created by the apartheid system geared up for war.
