This celebration of the 25th anniversary traces the evolution of a programme that has made household names of screen gardeners, and has been at the forefront of the ever-growing popularity of gardening.
And how times and techniques have changed. In a pilot programme for Gardening Club the curator of Oxford's
Botanical Gardens wanted to show viewers the beauty of his blue water lillies. But the cumbersome television equipment took so long to set up that the lilies were closing by the time the crew was ready. So he offered viewers a loofah instead.

In 1979 George Roberts, son of a Fleetwood trawlerman and father of two boys, started the slow and painful process of becoming Julia Grant. This documentary following the intimate transformation has been re-edited to form the first two parts of this trilogy. The third programme updates the story and reveals how Julia is coping with her new identity and role.
The films caused a stir when first screened although, as producer David Pearson wrote in Radio Times: "Judging from the hundreds of sympathetic letters received, the programmes have promoted some understanding."
In this first film Julia talks about her life - from early childhood through homosexual encounters and drag queen performances - and undergoes cross-examination by an apparently unsympathetic NHS psychiatrist. Subtitled
