Live from London's Royal Albert Hall, the opening concert in the 98th season of Henry Wood Promenade Concerts. Almost 400 singers and players throng the stage to perform this mighty work. The line-up of international soloists - all of them making their Proms debut - is headed by the young American soprano Susan Dunn, already a leading Verdi exponent. The performance takes place in the presence of the Princess of Wales.

The BBC Symphony Orchestra's Chief Conductor Andrew Davis says: "The opening concert of the Proms has always been, for me, one of the most exhilarating musical events of the year. The Royal Albert Hall seems to be purring with pride as it prepares to host the most wide-ranging festival of music in the world. And what better way to begin than with the Verdi Requiem which, with its combination of dramatic power and spiritual vision, constitutes his crowning achievement."

With Marjana Lipovsek (mezzo-soprano), Vinson Cole (tenor) and Paul Plishka (bass), BBC Singers, London Symphony Chorus, BBC Symphony Chorus and Orchestra.
Introduced by Richard Baker.

Another chance to see this BBC film, winner of the Bafta Award for Best Single Drama of 1991, being shown as part of the Alan Bennett season. Starring James Fox, Prunella Scales

Director John Schlesinger and producer Innes Lloyd teamed up with Alan Bennett for the last time on this adaptation of his successful National Theatre play. A witty examination of the thesis that appearances can be deceptive, it centres on a chance encounter between Anthony Blunt, Surveyor of the Queen's Pictures and the "fourth man" in the Cambridge spy ring, and Her Majesty the Queen.

First showing on network television for Fernando Solanas's acclaimed film, which ends the Discovering Latin America season.
Starring Miguel Angel Sola

Exile and homecoming are the themes of this haunting film: its rich visual imagery and striking soundtrack won Solanas the Best Director award at the 1988 Cannes Film Festival. He was later shot and wounded by reactionaries after a disagreement with Argentina's President Menem. Floreal has served five years in prison for subversion. On his release he tries to come to terms with his wife's infidelity and the lost years. Partly in Spanish with English subtitles.
