Foreign-affairs reports. The United Nations-a New Resolution
The United Nations had the reputation of being an ineffective talking shop. Its resolutions were there to be ignored. Following the end of the Cold War, its lead in the Gulf and the release of the hostages in Lebanon, there is fresh optimism. As the new Secretary-
General Boutros Ghaii takes up his job, Sheena McDonald asks whether the UN can finally live up to the ideals of its founders.

Charlotte and Abi
"You can't be a mum in prison. You have to shut off to survive. You have to forget your family." Charlotte, in her early 40s, is in Holloway Prison for the third time. Her daughter Abi, 19, has been without her mother for eight years of her life. Working with inmates as film crew, 40 Minutes follows the story of mother and daughter as they struggle with Abi's teenage crises while Charlotte serves her sentence. Producer Amy Hardie graduated from the National Film School last year with Kafi Story which won several international awards.
Working as a film and video tutor in Holloway gave her the idea of training inmates as sound recordists for the 40 Minutes film. Since then one ex-inmate has embarked on a full-time film course, and another is setting up her own production company. Editor Caroline Pick
