Lewes, East Sussex. The tiles used here look like bricks but aren't, and come in red, white and black. They were designed in the Georgian period to give old timber-framed buildings the fashionable brick look.
Lewes is built mainly of flint from the chalk downs. In addition, the tile and brick used provides, says presenter Alec Clifton-Taylor 'an incomparable legacy in a magnificent downland setting'. (R)
