12.30 Arts Foundation Course: King Cotton's Palace
This was Manchester's Victorian Town Hall, commissioned to portray the pride and ambition of this Victorian boom city, and paid for by wealth generated by the mills, canals and railways.

12.55 Democratic Government and Politics: The Sale of AWACS to Saudi Arabia
Just after President Reagan was elected in 1980, he agreed the sale of AWACS radar aircraft to Saudi Arabia. This triggered off a chain of events, which highlighted the checks and balances that are built into the American political system.

Weather followed by Pompeii
Introduced by Professor Barry Cunliffe
Feasts and orgies were in full swing in Pompeii and nearby Herculaneum when they were ended abruptly by the volcanic eruption of Vesuvius in AD79. The houses, temples and theatres were buried by a mass of molten lava and remained hidden for nearly 2,000 years until excavations revealed the wonderfully preserved buildings of Roman times. Professor Barry Cunliffe takes you through these uniquely complete streets and tells how the people lived then - and how little life has changed in the Bay of Naples today.

December: the Iron Baron The most glittering party in Baron Gilbert de Dietrich's social year is held just before Christmas. Aristocrats, captains of European industry and an international set of friends join the baron and baroness at their chateau in Alsace to shoot wild boar in the surrounding forests.
But the baron is more than a land-owning member of the nobility. He controls an industrial empire which has grown from a rural iron foundry started in 1684. Narrator Michael Dean Producer JOHN BIRD

Real Neighbours
Are your neighbours noisy, nosey, or nice?
In any street where there are frail elderly people living alone, the friendly neighbour who pops in from time to time can be a great asset. But, at the other extreme, tensions between neighbours over things like noise, fences or pets can lead to lengthy and bitter wrangles.
With the season of goodwill - and noisy parties - at hand, Margo MacDonald looks at ways of bringing out the best in the neighbourhood.

Secrets of Strangers with Alice Thomas Ellis
Alice Thomas Ellis believes in ghosts and miracles and God but she doesn't believe in Christmas. In 'Home Life', her weekly column for the Spectator, she transforms
NW1 into a Gothic drama and the making of mayonnaise into a miracle from Genesis.
But in her novels, she is the author of the highly-acclaimed The Twenty-
Seventh Kingdom and her sixth book The Clothes in the Wardrobe has just been published, the characters she creates acquire an independent existence of their own. She is somebody for whom the only reality is her fiction. Tonight's
Bookmark looks at the conflict between her two worlds and at her own attempts to examine the difference between them - her factual account of a family faced by an inexplicably delinquent child, written with her analyst Tom Pitt-Aikens .
