This rich archive is drawn upon to present a portrait of the deepening urban crisis through the eyes of the people who have to live with the problems and have struggled to solve them.

The Oriental Option
Japan is probably the richest country in the world; a country where product is king and finance its servant. The robot company Fanuc has six times the production capacity it needs and markets are poor. Even so Dr Inaba. diminutive shogun of this robot empire, can afford to sit out the lean years. He has the backing of government, other members of his industrial clan and the bank.
Things are different 6,000 miles away. The Clarkes are alone with their robot. All loans for their Hampshire business have had to be personally guaranteed. Their house is on the line. The bank has foreclosed and the company is in receivership.
