A Panorama report

President Reagan dreams of Star Wars as a perfect defence against nuclear attack. But will his Strategic Defence Initiative be a shield to protect America, as he hopes, or a sword with which to defeat the Soviet Union in nuclear war?

Panorama tells the curious story of the development of Strategic Defence: how its roots go back to the cold war and how its development has been nurtured by a small group of like-minded scientists in the United States' most secret weapons laboratories.

Villa Toronto
Presented by Roy Lancaster In 1930 the late CAPTAIN NEIL MCEACHARN purchased 100 acres on a hillside at Pallanza overlooking Lake Maggiore and backed by the spectacular Italian Alps.
His dream was to create an entirely new garden which would combine rare and exotic plants, shrubs and trees, collected from all over the world, and set in native conditions, with the general framework of an English garden. With the help of local and imported talent, his dream came true.
In 1952 the gardens were given over to the Italian government and opened to the public.
Today they are maintained in the style and splendour which Neil McEacharn himself would have wished.

Tarkovsky's Cinema
In 1986 Andrei Tarkovsky 's remarkable career in the cinema received the accolade of the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival. It sealed his reputation in the west as Russia's greatest living artist. In Moscow, however, his work has been at best ignored, at worst vilified as elitist and wilfully obscure. Official disfavour finally forced Tarkovsky to leave Russia to seek finance. It was only a few months before his recent death that his poetic and haunting films were given official recognition in Moscow. Tonight's Arena reviews
