Americans are Catholic, but their church is divided between priests who side with the poor and those who support the status quo.
Jack Pizzey observed the rituals of Ecuador's Holy
Week and talked to a priest working in the slums of Sao Paulo. He discovered two threats to the supremacy of the established church; a revival of traditional
African religions, and the zealous missionaries from Salt Lake City.

Five blacks in South Africa end up in jail - for crimes which range from shooting a security policeman to sleeping with a white boss's wife. What they all share is the conviction that the 'Day of Reckoning' is at hand. Asinamali was filmed in Johannesburg during the State of Emergency - before an audience which included Winnie Mandela. The play proved highly controversial. One performance was interrupted by an armed mob, who were out to kill the author: but failing to find him, they killed the play's promoter instead.
Written, directed and acted by blacks from the townships, the play offers a rare insight into the causes of violence in South Africa today. Production manager ROZELLE VOGELMAN
