Don Cupitt , Dean of Emmanuel College,
Cambridge, explores the revolution in ideas that has brought humanity from the secure world-view of the Middle Ages to today's crisis of faith.
4: Prometheus Unbound
During the 1840s European thought was still reeling from the French Revolution.
In Paris the young Karl Marx believed that by rejecting religious authority man could realise his true nature. From Marx's office, refurnished for the series, Don Cupitt traces the origins of political atheism.
In Copenhagen, during the same years, the Christian philosopher
Soren Kierkegaard was struggling to respond to the rise of humanism with a new philosophy - existentialism.

Benny Golson began his career as a tenor sax player and worked with Tadd Dameron, Lionel Hampton, Dizzy Gillespie, and later Art Farmer. His compositions 'Whisper not' and 'I remember Clifford' have become jazz standards.
In this 1964 recording from BBC2's Jazz 625 archive he directs a 24-piece British band, augmented to include euphonium, four horns, two oboes and cor anglais, playing a selection of his own exciting arrangements.
Among the soloists featured: Jimmy Deuchar (trumpet) the late and much missed Tubby Hayes (tenor sax) Keith Christie (trombone) Dave Goldberg (guitar).
Introduced by Steve Race.
