The 28th London Film Festival opened with the Hollywood block-buster Gremlins, and closed with the newly-scored Douglas Fairbanks classic silent The Thief of Baghdad. On show were over 100 films from 40 different countries in 'a celebration of cinema, not a collection of art movies', as Derek Malcolm , the Festival Director, described the choice.
