A liqueur used in the ratification of contracts, called 'ratafia' is one of the 18th-century drinks sampled by Arthur Negus and his guest, television cook Michael Smith.
They discuss the paraphernalia of drinking in the 18th century in the setting of the great dining-room of Chatsworth House, and discover how to 'crack open' a bottle of port.

Lord Victor Rothschild, head of the house of Rothschild in this country, has done many things besides being chairman of the family bank. First and foremost he was a distinguished scientist and Fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge; since then he has chaired many organisations including the Agricultural Research Council, Shell Research Limited, and the Royal Commission on Gambling. He was the first Director-General of the Government Think Tank - the culmination of a varied and powerful career.
He once numbered among his closest friends Anthony Blunt: 'It was a very mortal blow to find one had been hoodwinked for so many years'.
