The 1984 Museum of the Year Awards with Sue Jay and Kenneth Hudson Should museums be purely places of scholarship, or should they be part of the leisure industry, offering entertainment and a good day out? More and more museums try to do both. Few succeed as well as Quarry Bank Mill at Styal in Cheshire, built as a cotton-spinning mill in 1784, and now a museum which tells the story of the textile industry and its workforce with all the flair and confidence of the best of the new breed of museums. Still growing and developing, its achievements in the hands of director David Sekers are recognised by the prime award: Museum of the Year, 1984.
Also a look at the remarkable costume collection that cornered the Fine Art award for the new Fashion Gallery at Brighton Museum.

The Future is Further Away Than You Think with Heinz Wolff
Is it true what they say, that technology changes our lives overnight? Or does it just seem that way? In this programme Heinz Wolff steps aboard a London bus and finds himself immediately transported to a bizarre and unfamiliar world. The past. The year 1948. As he wanders round that strange era of de-mob suits, Clement Attlee , Victor Silvester and snoek, he asks: 'What has technology actually done for our lives? How different are our homes, our clothes, our food?' What has really changed since 1948, the year when George Orwell wrote Nineteen Eighty-Four?
A fun exercise -and quite an eye-opener.

The Man Behind the Mask
The rags-to-riches life story of German archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann was as glamorous as the magnificent treasures he discovered at Troy and Mycenae. The wonders of his exploits in Turkey and Greece are so strong a part of archaeological folklore that they are still repeated by scholars exactly as Schliemann wrote them down 100 years ago. But those stories are about to change for ever. For when two American professors took a new look at the life of Schliemann they were staggered by their discoveries, particularly since their investigation even calls into question the discovery of 'The Treasure of King Priam' at Troy - scene of Schliemann's greatest triumph.

In this lively social comedy, Streisand stars as Margaret, a young New Yorker with a distinct identity crisis.
