Eighth of ten programmes for trade unionists on Democracy at Work.
Is there a clash between industrial and political democracy when unions in publicly-owned industries or in local government seek more say in the decisions that affect their members?
For two years, manual and staff workers at Basildon in Essex have had speaking rights at council meetings and in committees. Is this the model for unions like NALGO, NUPE, GMWU to follow?

Narrated by Patrick Allen

When Sir Edmund Hillary planned a jet-boat expedition up the River Ganges - for millions the sacred heart of India - he knew he would find danger in the white waters of the upper reaches and a challenge in the final climb to its source in the Himalayas; but as well he found warmth and enthusiasm in the people of India as they thronged the banks in their thousands to honour this traveller on his pilgrimage up the holy Ganga.

In the decade before the fall of South Vietnam. DR NHUT SANH HUYNH and his wife prospered in their joint medical practice near Saigon. In 1975, the Communists confiscated their wealth and sent Dr Nhut to a concentration camp. After his release, the family escaped in an overcrowded fishing boat and on their third night at sea with the boat sinking and all their food and water gone, they were saved by the British ship Weltpark. After a year in this country on the dole and struggling to qualify as a doctor again Dr Nhut is coming to terms with a very different life.

continues the season of recent, highly-acclaimed films. 4 starring
Myrtle Gordon is a beautiful, famous and wealthy actress. During rehearsals for her latest play she witnesses the accidental death of an adoring young fan. The event, combined with the traumas of rehearsal, pushes her into a state of near-breakdown. The film brilliantly evokes the tensions and back-stage dramas that precede a first night, interwoven with a deeply-moving portrait of a vulnerable actress at a crisis in her career and life. Gena Rowlands gives one of the screen's greatest performances in the central role.
