In 1898 the discovery of gold drew to the Klondike adventurers and prospectors from all over the world. After them came a little Scottish bank clerk - Robert Service, who turned the tales of the High North into lively verse. He sold over a million copies of his first book.

This programme, filmed on location in the Yukon, tells the story of the Gold Rush through the eyes of Robert Service, with dramatised scenes of his life, with verse and with the astonishing still photographs taken on the Arctic trails and in the riotous gold towns by the early photographers.
