The Royal Institution Annual Christmas Lectures to Young People. A series of six programmes

In today's lecture Professor Carl Sagan brings his audience at the Royal Institution right up to date on the planet Mars by describing in detail what has been learnt from the brilliantly successful Viking project in 1976. Two identical spacecraft on the surface, equipped with high-definition cameras and soil analysis experiments, have told planetologists far more about Mars than we know about any other planet except our own.
Sagan shows the best of Viking's photographs and scientific results. Speaking from a full-scale replica of the Martian surface near the plain of Chryse, he gives the audience his personal answer to the highly controversial question: did Viking find signs of life?
