In the 60s there emerged unexpectedly from Kenya a batch of phenomenally gifted long- and middle-distance runners. The sporting pundits were confounded. At that time Kenya - indeed the whole of Africa - hardly rated in the athletic league table. Former Olympic coach Ron Pickering went to Kenya, and found that most of the runners came from two areas east of Lake Victoria - home of the Kalenjin and Kisii people.
