A look at the arts of the Common Market countries 4: Denmark
What has the welfare state done to the arts? How does Hamlet sound in Danish? Why do thousands of Danes live in communes? Why should architecture be disposable? What brings Peter Brook to a small Jutland town?
This programme shows some of the outstanding experiments in the arts, housing and education. There are excerpts from this year's most successful theatre productions, ranging from No, No, Nanette, Danish style, featuring
70-year-old MARGUERITE VIBY , to Niels Klim , Denmark's Orlando Furioso. It includes a rare chance to see some of Ingmar Bergman 's stage production of The Misanthrope.
The famous Royal Danish Ballet is prominently featured, with extracts from the Bournonville ballet Far from Denmark and the prize-winning pop ballet, The Triumph of Death, plus an interview with ballerina TONI LANDER. Two of the world's leading dancers can be seen in new ventures: ERIK BRUHN as an actor in Rashomon, and FLEMMING FLINDT as the director of a lavish production of Die Fledermaus.
Them and Us also takes a look at a small provincial town which spends E5 a head per year on the arts alone.
