The first of six films in a summer selection comes from Brazil and has never been shown in Britain. George Jonas's first feature based on Ariano Suassuna's internationally acclaimed play is a mixture of puppet show, miracle play, commedia dell'arte, and circus - a biting social satire set in the sertoes, the barren northern part of Brazil.
