As you sit reading this page how much are you conscious of the position and movements of your body? Movement is something we take almost for granted, yet how can we move so much without thinking about it? How can a pianist play 700 notes a minute with each of his arm movements using 12 separate muscles?

Starting from an investigation of just how each individual muscle contracts, tonight's Horizon tries to answer some of these questions. It traces the control of each of these muscles from the individual nerve fibre up to centres in the brain which link the thousands of small muscle contractions into one movement.

But with one child in 200 suffering from diseases of movement about which doctors are almost totally ignorant, the work in this programme has a very real practical objective.
