A film about Sotheby's of London.
Commentary by Edwin Mullins
It's not like a museum - it's more like a junk shop -the most marvellous junk shop in the world. Yet the discreet 18th-century premises in Bond Street are the centre of a remarkable business empire which has spread all over the world.
Sotheby's business is the past, not all Renoirs and Leonardos either, but all manner of wonderful and horrible clutter and artifacts and forgotten things. Not all of it is art, or even beautiful. But it all has in common that it has exhausted its use. All of it is old, and all of it has a price, and it's Sotheby's ultimate task to ensure that it gets the best price.

'The insular British have been the most persistent race of travellers. The type of descriptive documentary drawing which they applied so carefully to their own landscape was taken into all the continents of the world by professional and amateur artists alike - to every place where a European had built a fort or a mansion or pitched a tent.'
In this film Basil Taylor follows the trail of the English artists who were sightseers and travellers long before the package tour.
