This week: Bail Refused... two words which can mean imprisonment for innocent people. More than 40,000 people a year - nearly one third of all the people who appear before the courts of this country - are remanded in custody. And more than half are not eventually sent to prison - either because they have been found innocent, or their crime does not warrant prison.
Too often, say critics of the system, magistrates unquestioningly accept objections to bail and remand in custody, on what is described as 'a nod from the police.' But those concerned with law and order say: how do you ensure the bringing to trial of those prepared to ignore the law? How do you protect the public?
So what are the conditions for those who find their application for bail refused? - and what ether system could serve instead?

Leo Beskeen fell down a ventilating shaft, caught malaria while mining in Zambia and several times has only narrowly escaped being blown up by blasting operations. But he still says: 'When I go across there and smell the fumes of the dynamite smoke and the funk coming up from underground, it makes me long for my youth to go back again.'
Now semi-retired Leo Beskeen acts as a summer guide for visitors to the old engine house near Redruth where he once worked. When he started there as a boy of 13, Cornish tin mining was going into decline. Now it is about to enter what some believe will be its greatest boom ever.
