Jeremy James talks to Fred Streeter who is first, last and foremost a gardener, a man who, quite literally, talks to flowers. He has spent a long, long life building, loving and caring for beautiful gardens.
Baron Rothschild once sent for him in order to learn about gardens and then offered him a chance to learn about the French and Paris. But Fred Streeter was homesick - and turned down the Baron to return to his gardens.

This week: Motorway Madness
In November last year, in fog, on the A1 north of Doncaster, 100 vehicles were involved in a series of disastrous accidents. The final toll: two people killed; 34 injured - 13 of them seriously; and many vehicles written off. Newspaper headlines screamed, once more, 'motorway madness'.

Now, one year later, Man Alive has been back to the disaster area, talked to some of those who survived, asked the car drivers, lorry drivers and police how it happened - and why? In a motorway cafeteria beside the M6, scene of another terrible multiple collision earlier this autumn, Man Alive brings together drivers, police, psychologists and traffic experts to discuss how we can ever avoid motorway madness.

While the valleys grow green again some of the colliers of South Wales colour-match their jackets to their politics as they follow hounds over tip and dale, through undergrowth and open cast. Val Howells spends a day with the Banwen Hunt whose members pass the morning with their feet firmly under the ground and the afternoon with their heads in the clouds.

An evangelical missionary and his wife are stranded on a South Sea island with Sadie Thompson, a blonde American from San Francisco. Confined to the only lodging house, with the tropical rain beating on the tin roof, they take uneasy meals while Sadie plays the phonograph and entertains sailors.

What is your idea of a Stone Age man? Someone nasty, brutish and short perhaps? Professor Alexander Thorn believes this is doing our early ancestors less than justice, for in the ruined stone circles and standing stones of Britain he claims to have discovered evidence of men of real scientific and mathematical genius living in Britain 4,000 years ago.
