In 1763 the novelist Tobias Smollett took the Grand Tour, from Boulogne to Paris, south to the Mediterranean, and across to Rome - hating most of what he saw. In this film William Fox follows Smollett's route and written account of the journey. The words are 18th-century. The camera looks at places as they are today.
