In the once Golden State of California, oranges and lemons can no longer be satisfactorily grown within 100 miles of cities. Nearby, a million trees in a national forest have mysteriously died. In the Pacific breeding grounds of the giant seal the females have been inexplicably battering their young to death. All these incidents, the direct results of man's activity, are featured in this film. What do they signify?
To scientists like Professor Ehrlich these are not the inconvenient results of thoughtless, perhaps temporary pollution; they indicate the total, often irreversible destruction of the very biological systems on which we ourselves depend. But just how justified are their fears? Does the evidence really add up to so total a disruption of nature as they suggest?
Tonight's Horizon examines whether these are just isolated incidents or whether they link up into a warning system for the kind of disaster that scientists like Professor Ehrlich predict.
