A pioneer settler and his two sons fighting to keep their hard-won cattle land in the lawless territory of California during the closing years of last century.

A letter from his old friend Godfrey Evans brings Murdoch to a rough Sierra mining camp. Evans, who is dying, begs Murdoch to see that his little daughter Penny, who sometimes sings for the miners, gets a new start in life. Unfortunately Penny has no intention of leaving the camp and there are some very unscrupulous villa-ins, after a fortune Evans has hidden, who decide that she is the key to the missing money. As if that wasn't enough, there is Penny's very disapproving Aunt Hester...

This week's programme in the series on Man and Science Today.

The present measles epidemic highlights many of the problems of viral disease which face us all. Do you risk the possibility of infection with the danger of permanent disability, even death, or -do you use vaccines, the only established preventive, but which in the past have themselves been the cause of severe disablement?
This programme weighs the risks and asks: how.safe are the new vaccines and how effective? What are the prospects for chemical cures for viral diseases? And above all, what has happened to the most remarkable drug of all: interferon, discovered in Britain 13 years ago.
Horizon tonight reports on a remarkable new series of experiments that may be the turning point in this battle against the viruses that afflict man.

Played at the Firestone Country Club, Akron, Ohio
The four major golfing Championships of the world are inevitably won each year by four worthy champions, and for some years now the American tour circuit has been brought to a climax by this unique competition which brings together, over 36 holes of stroke play,
The United States Masters Champion Billy Casper
The United States Open Champion Tony Jacklin
The British Open Champion Jack Nicklaus
The United States PGA Champion Dave Stockton

Britain's Tony Jacklin thus achieves a unique double, for he qualified for this special event in 1969 as the British Open Champion. He will be out to avenge his defeat by Orville Moody, the then reigning US Open Champion, who won the World Series and the first prize of $50,000.
