A pioneer settler and his two sons fighting to keep their hard-won cattle land in the lawless territory of California during the closing years of last century.

A letter from his old friend Godfrey Evans brings Murdoch to a rough Sierra mining camp. Evans, who is dying, begs Murdoch to see that his little daughter Penny, who sometimes sings for the miners, gets a new start in life. Unfortunately Penny has no intention of leaving the camp and there are some very unscrupulous villa-ins, after a fortune Evans has hidden, who decide that she is the key to the missing money. As if that wasn't enough, there is Penny's very disapproving Aunt Hester...
