'Remember the great were not made for me, nor I for the great. My limited and abstracted art is to be found under every hedge, and in every lane, and therefore nobody thinks it worth picking up. Painting with me is another word for feeling, and I associate my careless boyhood with all that lies on the 'banks of the Stour.' This film, which explores the poetic beauty of the Constable country and above all the great paintings that became 'part of the landscape of every English mind,' also describes how this peaceful scene was a battlefield for an artist who by nature was deeply conservative.
As an artist he developed late and matured slowly. His big canvasses were a labour and subject to prolonged preparation and revision. Even so the fame he sought was long delayed. Landscape was not considered a worthy subject for the highest forms of art. His election to the Royal Academy came only at the fourth time. He was told that he had been lucky to get in.
