Gordon Wilkins covers the world of motoring with Michael Frostick and Judith Jackson.

For nights on end freighter aircraft flew more than 1,000 miles to the island of Malta to unload a cargo of cars under cover of darkness. The reason was an invitation to the world's press by one of Britain's 'Big Five' car firms to preview its new model for 1970. It's a four-door family saloon, a low-priced competitor to the Ford Escort and the Vauxhall Viva.
