The Royal Institution, London Annual Christmas Lectures to Young People

From birth we learn that our world contains objects of various sizes and shapes which exist in something we call space, and that the movement of these objects happens not only in space but also in a strange dimension called time. An amusing selection of miscellaneous objects move in bizarre ways to demonstrate what we know about time.

To Brazilians they're beija flores - flower kissers; to Cubans zumzum - their wings hum at 80 beats a second. They can fly backwards, must feed about every ten minutes, and have brilliant iridescent colours. No wonder they fascinate People: some enthusiasts even give them shower baths, cut their toe-nails, and analyse their amazing flight by filming in ultra-slow motion.

Is the most advanced music of today in danger of becoming totally inaccessible to anyone other than those directly involved in the making of it? What are the areas in the contemporary music scene which would seem relevant to our modern society? Music Now examines the work of Cornelius Cardew, John Dankworth, and The Rolling Stones, and discusses some of the many aspects of contemporary music development.

On 4 October 1936 a part of East London became a battlefield. Nothing like it had been seen before. It was the day when the British Fascists attempted to march through the Jewish East End.
A quarter of a million Londoners mobilised to prevent them and as one of them says: 'From that day onwards Mosley never again ventured into the ghetto streets of East London.'
Taking part: Sir Oswald Mosley, Bill Fishman, Miss Edith Ramsay, Phil Piratin, Dr Hugh Faulkner
