3/5. During the 1950s Miles Davis became established as one of the best-known and most influential trumpeters in jazz. But as Donald Macleod discovers, he was also changing the nature of jazz composition. For Louis Malle 's film Ascenseur pour I'Echafaud (1958) he improvised the score to his soundtrack, using small fragments of melodic ideas to construct entire pieces. Back in the United States he tried the same ideas with his band, on pieces such as Sid's Ahead. He also introduced modal jazz, with Milestones, a stepping stone towards the album Kind of Blue, on which he worked with pianist Bill Evans to produce such music as Blue in Green. Repeated on Tuesday at 12 midnight
