Brian Priestley looks back 50 years to a historic night, 21 February 1954, at New York's famous Birdlandjazz club. On the bill were Art Blakey (drums), Clifford Brown (trumpet), Lou Donaldson (alto saxophone), Curly Russell and Horace Silver (piano). Their set proved to be a landmark in the development of modern jazz and resulted in the influential album A Night at Birdland.

Bobby Previte Double Bill
The diverse talents of the American jazz drummer and composer Bobby Previte are highlighted in performances by two of his projects, recorded earlier this month at the CBSO Centre in Birmingham. With hisjazz orchestra, the 23 Constellations of Joan Miro , Previte performs his emotional responses to Miro's series of abstract paintings, the Constellations.
The other half of the programme is an improvised, groove-based setwith two of New York's most outstanding musicians, eight-string guitarist Charlie Hunter , whose unique instrument (a hybrid of bass and guitar) and his rock-influenced style have attracted a cult following, and DJ Logic on the turntables.
