on BBC Radio 3

Brian Priestley looks back 50 years to a historic night, 21 February 1954, at New York's famous Birdlandjazz club. On the bill were Art Blakey (drums), Clifford Brown (trumpet), Lou Donaldson (alto saxophone), Curly Russell and Horace Silver (piano). Their set proved to be a landmark in the development of modern jazz and resulted in the influential album A Night at Birdland.
