3/5. Charpentier's first patroness, the Duchesse de Guise, was a pious and music-loving sponsor. In the mid-1680s Charpentier took up another appointment, which his friend and fellow musician Sebastian de Brossard said was "among the most brilliant" in the French musical world, that of composer and master of music at St Louis, the most important Jesuit church in Paris, famed for its excellent music-making.
