Alexander's Feast
The first night of Alexander's Feast in 1736 was one of the most successful of Handel's
London premieres. Based on Dryden'sepic Song forst Cecilia's Day extolling the power of music, the work proved to be only second to Messiah in popularity during the remainder of Handel's life. This concert, given on Saturday in Newcastle upon Tyne, includes the concerto grosso originally composed for performance between the two acts. Introduced by Paul Guinery.
