5/5. Donald Macleod looks at Bruckner's later years, during which the composer endured the worst professional and personal crisis of his life. The situation was triggered by a musical supporter's inability to comprehend his Symphony No 8 and the upshot was that the composer, dogged by self-doubt, anxiety and depression, spent a long period of time frantically revising earlier works. Only after several years spent in this fashion was Bruckner finally able to return to composing fresh pieces, including his final choral works and his Ninth Symphony, which he failed to complete before his death.
