1/4. This month sees the 70th anniversary of the Village Vanguard, originally a platform for local poets and, since the late 1950s, the flagship of New York's jazz scene. Brian Priestley charts the club's history, with contributions from its manager Lorraine Gordon, cabaret performer and lyricist Betty Comden, record producer Orrin Keepnews, and writers Nat Hentoff and Ira Gitler.
Rigoletto Verdi 's operatic version of Victor Hugo 's play Le Roi S 'amuse tells the tragic story of Rigoletto, jester to the Duke of Mantua, their enemy Monterone, and the Duke's daughter Gilda. Presented by John Shea.
