Stephen Johnson concludes his survey of recordings made by Manchester's Halle Orchestra for the BBC with a look back to the seventies. Against a backdrop of the sounds of Bessie Smith , Duke Ellington and Fats Waller , they investigate the story of its heyday in the twenties and its continuing influence today. With archive recordings of Harlem writers, including Langston Hughes , Claude McKay and Richard Bruce Nugent.

Chekhov was only 27 when he wrote this portrait of Nikolai Ivanov, an intelligent man beset by guilt and frustration when he finds himself drawn to a beautiful young girl.

Paul Guinery presents a concert recorded at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London this month, featuring adult choirs from Latvia, Denmark, the Netherlands and Slovenia, and youth choirs from Newfoundland and the UK, all visiting for the final of the Let the Peoples Sing contest. Plus previous winners, Norwegian ladies choir Embla. The choirs and audience combine to sing I Am the Song, a specially commissioned setting by Bob Chilcott of a poem by Charles Causley, conducted by David Willcocks.

Petroc Trelawny presents more highlights from last month's brass band festival in Birmingham. Including a recently discovered work from 1930-31 by Havergal Brian which received its first performance.
