Over four hours of music from Africa, introduced by Lucy Duran and Eugene Skeef. Music is a powerful link with Africa's heritage, and a new audience across the world is becoming aware of its infectious appeal. The evening includes specially recorded highlights from one of Africa's biggest music festivals, "Awesome Africa", which took place last month in the Shongweni Resources Reserve in South Africa and featured performances by Ismael Lo from Senegal and South Africa's own Busi Mhlongo.
Some of Africa's best musicians reflect on songs which carry a special message, including Youssou N'Dour, Cheikh Lo , Afel Bocoum and Oliver Mtukudzi. Plus music performed live in the studio by Moroccan lute player Hassan Erraji and Ethiopian lyre player Alula Andetu.
10.00 Verity Sharp introduces music from across Africa, live from London's Jazz Cafe. Senegalese kora player Seckou Keita performs with Justin Vali , who plays the valiha, a bamboo zither from the central plains of Madagascar. Plus Kekele, a supergroup of master musicians from Central Africa who are recreating the classic sound of Congolese rumba.

Africa Music Night: A celebration of the music of Africa, including live performances by some of the continent's leading artists.

7.30pm R3
Radio 3 has done much to give African music a British following, notably via the wonderfully eclectic Late junction and Andy Kershaw's shows. Tonight the network devotes the entire evening to African music and the issues that often inspire the music. There is live music in the studio from artists who include Youssou N'Dour and Oliver Mtukudzi and they also take part in the discussion, which ranges over Aids, politics, myth and history. At 10pm, Verity Sharp presents a live concert from the Jazz Cafe in London, which features the Sengalese kora player Seckou Keita and Justin Vali. There is also a first UK appearance by the remarkable Congolese rumba band Kekele. The evening's presenters are Lucy Duran and Eugene Skeef. Read more on page 27.
