4: Superficial or Facile?
By the 1840s, when he was in his thirties, some critics have argued that Mendelssohn had "gone off". But the music in today's programme is that of a great composer at the height of his powers. The pieces may be sullied with unfortunate associations, or have become so well known that it is hard to listen to them with fresh ears, but there is no mistaking their power in performances of conviction and authority. Variations sérieuses, Op 54 Alfred Brendel (piano)

The Ospedali of Venice
The four great Ospedali or hospices of Venice enjoyed a reputation as progressive centres of music-making, the best-known being the Pieta and its association with Antonio Vivaldi. Lucie Skeapingtravels to Venice to discover the origin of music-making in Venice's charity institutions and reflects on the many composers and musicians - especially woman musicians - who worked there. The programme includes music by Vivaldi, Johann Hasse , Anna Bonn and Maddelena Sirmen.

A concert given on Sunday at London's Royal Festival Hall. The pianist Stephen Hough made his London debut at the Wigmore Hall in 1982 and has since appeared with most of the world's leading orchestras in an intensive and demanding schedule of international appearances. His immense repertory ranges from the Classical and Romantic periods to contemporary piano works - he was the dedicatee of Lowell Liebermann 's second piano concerto and made the first recording of John Corigliano 's Etude Fantasy.
