A performance of Benjamin Britten 's operatic swansong Death in Venice. Based on Thomas Mann 's novella, its central character, himself a novelist, leaves
Munich for Venice in search of inspiration, which he finds in the form of a young boy, on whom he gazes from a distance.
Britten's heart condition became very serious while he was composing this piece and he realised it would probably be his final major work. He lived long enough to see Peter Pears sing the role of Aschenbach in the first London performance atCovent Garden in 1973.
