A performance of Benjamin Britten 's operatic swansong Death in Venice. Based on Thomas Mann 's novella, its central character, himself a novelist, leaves
Munich for Venice in search of inspiration, which he finds in the form of a young boy, on whom he gazes from a distance.
Britten's heart condition became very serious while he was composing this piece and he realised it would probably be his final major work. He lived long enough to see Peter Pears sing the role of Aschenbach in the first London performance atCovent Garden in 1973. Michael Chance (countertenor), Anthony Rolfe Johnson (tenor), Alan Opie (baritone). BBC Philharmonic, conductor Yan Pascal Tortelier
8.55 Twenty Minutes: From within These Walls Rachel Whiteread is famous for her plaster and resin casts of the interior of domestic objects. In Ghost she cast complete room and, in her most famous work, House, she cast an entire Victorian house near her east London studio. She shows Tim Marlow around her large canal-side warehouse, full of found objects, plans, photos and works in progress. (R)
