Gypsy Music
Elements of the flamenco style were absorbed by the Gypsies as they travelled through Spain. Many settled in Andalusia and developed a new and intense way of singing - cante flamenco. Tommy Pearson explores the ways in which this and other styles reflect the tragedy and futility of the Gypsy's life in Spain. Repeat. See also 5pm

This week sees the opening of the film Gadjo Dilo , in which a young
Parisian goes to Romania to search for Gypsy music. Sean Rafferty discovers what sort of music he would have found and what musical legacy Romanian Gypsy music has left the classical world. Music includes Tavemer and Tchaikovsky, and, at about 6.40, Brahms's Violin Sonata No 3 in D minor, Op 108, played by Itzhak Perlman and Vladimir Ashkenazy (piano).
