Maria Curcio was one of the few teenage pianists to become a pupil of Artur Schnabel , forging a link in a chain of teachers stretching back through Liszt to Beethoven. She paid a high price for her devotion to protecting Jewish friends in Amsterdam during the Second World War - her health broke down and her playing career was curtailed. But she continues to pass on her musical wisdom to performers of the current generation.
