Veteran Hungarian composer Gyorgy Ligeti is Michael Berkeley's guest. This month he returns to London's South
Bank for the second part of Clocks and Clouds, a three-year retrospective of his work. Persecuted by the Nazis as a young man, Ligeti came to international prominence in the 1960s with works such as Apparitions and Lux Aeterna (memorably used in the soundtrack of Stanley Kubrick's film 2001: a Space Odyssey). Janos Starker has established himself as one of the world's greatest cellists and finest teachers. In the last of three programmes, Moray Welsh finds out why Starker considers teaching the most important part of his life. Former pupils recount their often frightening experiences, and Starker plays his arrangement of Bottermund's Paganini Variations, Faure's Après un Rêve and Papillon, and two jewels of the repertoire - Haydn's Concerto in D and his latest recording of Bach's Suite No 6 for solo cello.

A performance of the new opera by Einojuhani Rautavaara based on the life of Finland's first national writer that proved to be the hit of this year's Savonlinna Opera Festival.
Several of Rautavaara's pieces, like Cantus Arcticus and Angel of Light, are achieving cult status, and in this opera he writes continuously grateful vocal lines. It portrays Kivi's decline into alcoholism and schizophrenia in music of consoling tenderness. Sung in Finnish.

Tausig Three Waltz Caprices
In 1740, Prince Friedrich Christian of Poland visited Venice, where he went to hear a concert given by the female orchestra of the Ospedale della Pieta under their director Antonio Vivaldi.
The Academy of Ancient Music led by violinist Andrew Manze re-create the event in a Radio 3 invitation concert recorded in the Concert Hall of the Royal College of Music, London.
