(1842-1912)
1: In Thrall to Eros
Although he wrote a wide range of works for the theatre, from light comedies and fairy-tale fantasies to orthodox grand opera, Massenet's main appeal lies in his skill at using music to depict erotic obsession: give him a doomed relationship or a nasty case of sexual dependency, and he was away. Today's programme concentrates on two of his best-known and most popular operas - Manon and Werther- and also takes a nervous sideways look at La Navarraise. Presented by Rodney Milnes.
