An impressionistic view of the BBC Symphony Orchestra drawn from its members past and present.
Each surrounded by his own individual environment of sound, the musicians, as they play, voice their thoughts on the life and on music as they hear it.
The performance by the BBC Symphony Orchestra, leader Bela Dekany, of Bela Bartok's Concerto for Orchestra is conducted by Pierre Boulez. It was specially recorded in order that the listener, apart from hearing the 'orchestral ' passages from the front may also have an impression of the subtle differences in the sound normally heard by each musician.
Written and produced by Desmond Briscoe, assisted in the Radiophonic Workshop by Roger Limb.

ALAN: I don't talk to myself. I have to choose my words carefully. To rendezvous in parks and Public places with myself. The freedom to muiible and swear might be pleasant - but obviously, I have to enunciate clearly.
He might have been a BBC announcer: he is under the psychiatrist believing his words are being broadcast wherever he is; he remembers the year that Children's Hour ceased; he is obsessed with truth in a mendacious world; he begins to rebel against social engineering and corporate monoliths.
