Soler (1728-1783)
Arriaga (1806-1826)
Two Spaniards, who, long before the rise of nationalism, conveyed in their music a distinctly national flavour.
Padre Antonio Soler , whose 250th anniversary is marked by these programmes, was a pupil of Scarlatti. Best known for his keyboard music, he has come to be regarded as the Spanish Scarlatti Juan Crisostomo Arriaga , on the other hand, was born on the 50th anniversary of Mozart's birth, and, like him, began com: posing at an early age. Even though he died before reaching his 20th birthday, his achievements have earned him the epithet ' the Spanish Mozart '.
