In the late 1950s a group of researchers at Oxford University were looking at subtle variations in the blood proteins of man. The techniques they developed led to one of the most remarkable medical detection stories of the century - the discovery of the infectious agent associated with Hepatitis B. Professor B. S. Blumberg of the Institute for Cancer Research in Philadelphia shared the 1976 Nobel Prize for Medicine and Physiology for his contribution to the hepatitis discovery He discusses with John Maddox the intellectual challenge of the work and the enormous practical benefits that have accrued.
