With world champion Jerome Young and silver medallist Tyree Washington out of the Olympics, the men's 400m field looks wide open. Daniel Caines , Tim Benjamin and Malachi Davis lead the British charge at 7.20, all hoping to emulate Roger Black 's medal-winning 1996 showing.

A return to Athens for the men's 10,000m final at 8.35. Ethiopia's Haile Gebrselassie is the 10,000m king, having won the last two Olympics. However, he had to settle for silver at last year's world championships, losing out to fellow Ethiopian Kenenisa Bekele. Round one of the women's 5,000m follows at 9.15.
