The frigate bird is a fast and fearsome marauder that ambushes and mugs coastal seabirds to steal their fishing catch. But this pirate with an eight-foot wingspan is also a great ocean voyager.

Each year 10,000 of them gather on Mexico's Isabel Island to breed and raise their young in violent conditions. It's a recipe for some very bad behaviour.
