In the first live VJ event, 20,000 veterans and their families gather outside Buckingham Palace for a service in the presence of the Queen, followed by a march-past.
The service includes a two-minutes' silence, after which poppies will be scattered.

VJ 50 Live
2.30pm BBC 1 Emotions will be running high in a full day of pageantry marking the : 50th Anniversary of VJ Day.The day's events start with an open-air service conducted by the Archbishop of Canterbury outside Buckingham Palace, attended by the Queen and the royal family. A veterans' parade follows, led by four Gurkhas bearing the Victoria Cross, the highest award for valour, which they won in the Far East campaign. The arrival of a Lancaster bomber signals the start of two minutes' silence; when it returns, the bomb bays will open to release thousands of poppies. At 9.55pm, there are highlights of the rest of the day's celebrations. The Queen takes to the Thames for a a waterborne procession from Westminster Pier to the Pool of London, accompanied by some Dunkirk little ships. After a veterans' reception on board the royal yacht and an aerial display, the day culminates with a massive firework display on the river.
